New priests serving at Cathedral and at St. Joan of Arc

Two new Religious Order priests began serving in the Diocese of Boise during the last month.

The following story appeared in the August 27 Idaho Catholic Register.

Father Daniel de Maria Garza

Father Daniel de Maria Garza of Verbum Spei (VS) will help with Hispanic ministry at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Boise.

He was ordained on July 11 this year in the Verbum Spei community of Saltillo, Mexico.

Before answering the call to the priesthood, Father de Maria was a medical doctor.

While in medical school, he went to a retreat with Verbum Spei, a religious community begun by several priests from different orders. Although he felt drawn to the community, he was afraid of what his family would think if he joined, he said in an interview last year for the Idaho Catholic Register.

After graduating from medical school, Father de Maria provided free medical care for the rural community of El Galeme, south of Monterrey, Mexico.

He enjoyed his work, but says he did not feel passionate about it. He joined the Verbum Spei community in 2011.

Father de Maria helped at the Cathedral for three months last year.

Father Nicholas Eichman

Father Nicholas Eichman, of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter (FSSP), is serving at St. Joan of Arc Parish in Post Falls. He replaces Father Andrew Rapaport, FSSP, who was transferred to St. Francis de Sales Parish in Mableton, Ga.

Father Eichman was ordained in Lincoln, Neb., on May 28 of this year along with his twin brother. He has two brothers who are priests and his older sister is a Carmelite nun.

Father Eichman was born in Fort Wayne, Ind., where his family currently resides. He is the sixth of eleven children. Father Eichman graduated from Seton Home Study School and attended Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, majoring in engineering and business for two semesters before being accepted at Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary in Denton, Neb. in 2014.
