Canonical Status of Former Reverend Robert Mendez Esquivel

The Diocese of Boise announces that the Holy Father has granted a dispensation from the obligations deriving from Sacred Ordination to former Reverend Robert Mendez Esquivel. In accordance with the rescript issued through the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, he has been returned to the lay state and is no longer a cleric (priest) of the Catholic Church. This decision was communicated to Mr. Mendez Esquivel on August 6, 2026.

Following his guilty plea and subsequent criminal sentencing in the State of Idaho, and while his canonical case was pending before the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, Mr. Mendez Esquivel submitted a voluntary petition to the Holy Father requesting this dispensation. Bishop Peter Christensen supported the petition and transmitted it to the Dicastery in accordance with the norms of the Church.

With the granting of the rescript, the Church's canonical process concerning Mr. Mendez Esquivel has concluded.

Bishop Peter Christensen offers the following message to the faithful:

“The conclusion of this canonical process marks the end of a painful chapter in the life of our diocesan family. While no administrative or legal action can undo the harm that has been caused, I pray that this brings a measure of clarity and closure for those who have carried the burden of this case.

From the moment these allegations were first brought forward, the Diocese acted promptly and worked diligently to fulfill its responsibilities under both civil law and the law of the Church. We have cooperated fully with civil authorities, complied with the directives of the Holy See, and remained committed to addressing this matter with honesty, accountability, and pastoral care.

The Diocese of Boise expresses its gratitude to the civil authorities who carried out their responsibilities with professionalism throughout the criminal proceedings and to all those who assisted the Diocese in fulfilling its own canonical obligations.

Our commitment to the protection of children, young people, and vulnerable adults remains unwavering. Together, let us continue to build communities rooted in faith, vigilance, accountability, and hope. May Christ, the Good Shepherd, guide us always in truth and charity.”

Although this matter has now reached its conclusion, our work of safeguarding, rebuilding trust, and proclaiming the Gospel continues each day in our parishes, schools, and ministries.
