Bishop's Letter to Catechumens and Candidates

My dear Catechumens and Candidates in Christ,

Grace and peace to you in our Lord Jesus Christ.

It is with great joy and paternal affection that I write to you as you celebrate the Rite of Election of Catechumens and the Call to Continuing Conversion of Candidates. In this sacred moment, the Church publicly recognizes the work that God has begun in you and affirms your desire to walk more fully in the light of Christ. This recognition is not merely ceremonial. It is a sign that the Lord himself, who has called you by name, now draws you more deeply into his life, his truth, and his saving grace.

These sacred rites hold a special place in the life of our Diocese. Each year, they stand as a powerful witness to the living presence of Christ, who continues to call men and women to himself. The Church rejoices in your response to his call, and all of us are strengthened in faith and renewed in hope through your generous desire to follow him. Your journey reflects the quiet yet powerful work of the Holy Spirit, who enlightens minds, strengthens hearts, and leads souls toward the fullness of life in Christ.

To you, our beloved Catechumens, the Church speaks words of profound meaning and hope: “Now, with divine help, your duty, like ours, is to be faithful to God, who is faithful to his call, and to strive with generous spirit to reach the full truth of your Election.” These words remind you that your journey is grounded not first in your own strength, but in the unwavering faithfulness of God. He has called you out of love. He has chosen you for himself. He now invites you, during this final and sacred period of preparation, to open your hearts ever more fully to the truth of the Gospel and to conform your lives to it.

This time before the Easter Vigil, known as the Period of Purification and Enlightenment, is a privileged season of grace. It is a time for deeper prayer, for sincere repentance, and for attentive listening to the Word of God. The Lord is preparing your hearts to receive the great gift of new life through the Sacraments of Initiation—Baptism, Confirmation, and the Most Holy Eucharist. Through these sacred mysteries, you will be united fully to Christ and incorporated into his Body, the Church. I encourage you to embrace these remaining weeks with generosity, humility, and trust, confident that “the one who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ” (Philippians 1:6).

To you, our dear Candidates, who already share in the grace of Baptism, the Church likewise speaks words of encouragement and invitation: “The Church recognizes your desire to be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit and to have a place at Christ’s eucharistic table. Join with us this Lent in a spirit of repentance. Hear the Lord’s call to conversion and be faithful to your baptismal covenant.” Your journey is a powerful witness to the enduring call of Christ, who continually invites his disciples to deeper conversion and greater fidelity.

Your path reminds all of us that Baptism is not the end of conversion, but its beginning. The grace you have received calls you forward—to a renewed and informed commitment to live fully as disciples of Jesus Christ. This sacred season of Lent invites you to examine your hearts, to renew your baptismal promises with clarity and conviction, and to prepare to be strengthened by the gift of the Holy Spirit and nourished by Christ himself in the Holy Eucharist.

Please know that you are deeply loved and remembered in prayer. The entire family of faith throughout the Diocese of Boise, together with your parish communities, your pastors, catechists, sponsors, families, and fellow parishioners, accompanies you with prayer and offers unwavering support during these final days of preparation. We walk with you in hope and joy as you enter this final preparatory period before the great celebration of the Paschal Mystery at the Easter Vigil, when you will encounter Christ in a profound and life-changing way through the Sacraments. Trust in the Lord, remain faithful to his call, and do not be afraid, for as Sacred Scripture assures us: “He who calls you is faithful, and he will accomplish it” (1 Thessalonians 5:24). Be assured in a particular way of my personal prayers and blessing for each of you, that the Lord who has called you by name may strengthen your hearts, deepen your faith, and bring to fulfillment the saving work he has begun within you. I look forward with great joy to welcoming you fully into the life of the Church and to rejoicing with you as you receive the saving mysteries of Christ at the Easter Vigil.

Queridos Catecúmenos y Candidatos en Cristo,

Gracia y paz a ustedes en nuestro Señor Jesucristo.

Es con gran alegría y afecto paternal que les escribo mientras celebran el Rito de Elección de los Catecúmenos y el Llamado a la Conversión Continua de los Candidatos. En este momento sagrado, la Iglesia reconoce públicamente la obra que Dios ha comenzado en ustedes y afirma su deseo de caminar más plenamente en la luz de Cristo. Este reconocimiento no es simplemente ceremonial. Es un signo de que el Señor mismo, quien los ha llamado por su nombre, ahora los atrae más profundamente hacia su vida, su verdad y su gracia salvadora.

Estos ritos sagrados ocupan un lugar especial en la vida de nuestra Diócesis. Cada año, son un testimonio poderoso de la presencia viva de Cristo, quien continúa llamando a hombres y mujeres hacia sí mismo. La Iglesia se regocija en su respuesta a su llamado, y todos nosotros somos fortalecidos en la fe y renovados en la esperanza por su generoso deseo de seguirlo. Su camino refleja la obra silenciosa pero poderosa del Espíritu Santo, quien ilumina la mente, fortalece el corazón y guía las almas hacia la plenitud de la vida en Cristo.

A ustedes, nuestros queridos Catecúmenos, la Iglesia les dirige palabras de profundo significado y esperanza: “Ahora, con la ayuda divina, su deber, como el nuestro, es ser fieles a Dios, que es fiel a su llamado, y esforzarse con espíritu generoso por alcanzar la plena verdad de su Elección.” Estas palabras les recuerdan que su camino no está basado primero en sus propias fuerzas, sino en la fidelidad inquebrantable de Dios. Él los ha llamado por amor. Él los ha elegido para sí mismo. Ahora los invita, durante este período final y sagrado de preparación, a abrir sus corazones aún más plenamente a la verdad del Evangelio y a conformar sus vidas a esa verdad.

Este tiempo antes de la Vigilia Pascual, conocido como el Período de Purificación e Iluminación, es una temporada privilegiada de gracia. Es un tiempo de oración más profunda, de arrepentimiento sincero y de escucha atenta de la Palabra de Dios. El Señor está preparando sus corazones para recibir el gran don de la vida nueva a través de los Sacramentos de Iniciación: el Bautismo, la Confirmación y la Santísima Eucaristía. A través de estos sagrados misterios, serán unidos plenamente a Cristo e incorporados a su Cuerpo, que es la Iglesia. Los animo a abrazar estas semanas restantes con generosidad, humildad y confianza, seguros de que “el que comenzó en ustedes la buena obra la llevará a término hasta el día de Cristo Jesús” (Filipenses 1,6).

A ustedes, nuestros queridos Candidatos, que ya comparten la gracia del Bautismo, la Iglesia también les dirige palabras de aliento e invitación: “La Iglesia reconoce su deseo de ser sellados con el don del Espíritu Santo y de tener un lugar en la mesa eucarística de Cristo. Únanse a nosotros en esta Cuaresma con espíritu de arrepentimiento. Escuchen el llamado del Señor a la conversión y sean fieles a su alianza bautismal.” Su camino es un poderoso testimonio del llamado constante de Cristo, quien continúa invitando a sus discípulos a una conversión más profunda y a una fidelidad más plena.

Su camino nos recuerda a todos que el Bautismo no es el final de la conversión, sino su comienzo. La gracia que han recibido ahora los llama hacia adelante, hacia un compromiso renovado y consciente de vivir plenamente como discípulos de Jesucristo. Este tiempo sagrado de Cuaresma los invita a examinar sus corazones, a renovar sus promesas bautismales con claridad y convicción, y a prepararse para ser fortalecidos por el don del Espíritu Santo y alimentados por Cristo mismo en la Santísima Eucaristía.

Sepan que son profundamente amados y recordados en la oración. Toda la familia de fe en la Diócesis de Boise, junto con sus comunidades parroquiales, sus pastores, catequistas, padrinos, familias y compañeros feligreses, los acompaña con oración y les ofrece su apoyo constante durante estos días finales de preparación. Caminamos con ustedes con esperanza y alegría mientras entran en este período final de preparación antes de la gran celebración del Misterio Pascual en la Vigilia Pascual, cuando encontrarán a Cristo de una manera profunda y transformadora a través de los Sacramentos. Confíen en el Señor, permanezcan fieles a su llamado y no tengan miedo, porque como nos asegura la Sagrada Escritura: “El que los llama es fiel y cumplirá su promesa” (1 Tesalonicenses 5,24). Tengan la certeza, de manera particular, de mis oraciones personales y de mi bendición para cada uno de ustedes, para que el Señor que los ha llamado por su nombre fortalezca sus corazones, profundice su fe y lleve a plenitud la obra salvadora que ha comenzado en ustedes. Espero con gran alegría darles la bienvenida plena a la vida de la Iglesia y regocijarme con ustedes cuando reciban los misterios salvadores de Cristo en la Vigilia Pascual.
